Weddings Might Be Changing…

Welcome to my August Blog!

It’s likely you will have seen lots of noise regarding weddings and the future of wedding ceremonies here in the UK. If we are honest, the noise is mainly coming from celebrants but that’s ok and it really could revolutionise their business.

The Goverement have been wanting the discussion for years but finally they are moving forward and we could be some big changes coming to weddings!

They are looking at reforming wedding law and, if the proposals eventually become law, they could completely change where and how couples can legally get married.

Currently, legal civil ceremonies need to take place at an approved wedding venue, like The Beverley Barn with a registrar. However, under the new, proposed system, the focus could move away from licensing the venue and instead towards authorising the person conducting the ceremony.

This could give couples far more freedom over where they say “I do” – potentially opening the door to legal ceremonies in private gardens, family homes, up mountains, in outdoor spaces and other random locations that aren’t currently approved wedding venues.

Nothing has changed yet. This is currently a Government consultation, open until 24 September 2026, and any changes would need to go through the legislative process before becoming law so there’s lots of time.

But if the reforms do happen, they could represent one of the biggest changes to weddings in England and Wales for generations.

Do I think it’s a bad thing? No absolutely not, I do think we will see less business through our doors however couples will always choose a more personal, bespoke ceremony and if there’s the freedom to get married anywhere then why not!
